How to Buy a Used Phone Safely in 2026
A practical checklist for buying pre-owned phones without getting scammed.

Buying a pre-owned phone can save money, but only if you validate the device before payment.
1. Check IMEI and blacklist status
Always confirm the IMEI from Settings and by dialing *#06#. The numbers should match the SIM tray (when available) and invoice.
2. Verify battery health
For iPhone, check battery health directly in settings. For Android, use diagnostics or trusted battery tools. In general, avoid devices under 80% battery health unless pricing reflects replacement costs.
3. Test critical hardware
Run a quick checklist:
- Touch response across the full display
- Face ID / fingerprint sensor
- Cameras (front + rear)
- Speakers and microphones
- Charging port and cable fit
- Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and cellular
4. Confirm account lock status
Ask seller to remove iCloud/Google account lock in front of you. Never accept "I'll remove it later".
5. Buy from trusted channels
Prefer verified marketplaces with return windows and clear grading standards.
A careful 10-minute inspection protects you from most used-phone risks.
